The latest industry data suggests that Guatemala Sugar Production 2026/27 is set to reach a historic 2.81 million tonnes…
Guatemala is set to boost its sugar output in marketing year (MY) 2026/27, with production forecast at 2.81 million tonnes โ a 4.8% increase from the 2.68 million tonnes estimated for MY 2025/26, according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).
Acreage Expansion: The Primary Driver The growth is largely driven by a strategic expansion in harvested area. Sugarcane acreage is expected to reach 262,000 hectares in MY 2026/27, up 5.7% from a revised estimate of 248,000 hectares in the prior year. A key contributor to this surge is the Magdalena Sugar Mill in Retalhuleu, which is bringing approximately 14,000 additional hectares into production.
Supply and Demand Balance On the demand side, domestic sugar consumption is forecast to rise modestly by 1.3% to 1.13 million tonnes. This leaves a substantial surplus for the international market, with exports projected to reach nearly 1.69 million tonnes.
